4-20 - National Weed Day....

As if this week wasn't stressful enough, I woke up this morning to the news (on Facebook) that one of my daughter's guy friends had died last night. He was funny & smart & talented. He was a star basketball and football player at her high school with a darling girlfriend that he has dated for a few years. And everyone really liked him. Nothing was mentioned how he died on FB, so I assumed a wreck like most of the deaths around here. Then the truth started coming out that it was a drug overdose.... and that another guy he was with was "barely living" and had been airlifted to San Antonio. That boy has grown up with my daughter, and is darling and charming and lives life on the edge. He's just never had that little voice to tell him something's dangerous. He was always an accident waiting to happen.
Then, word came out that the boy that supplied the drugs to them was in their class, and had been arrested. DD has grown up with that boy too. He's not a malicious kid but, well, isn't too bright either. And with current laws, that kid won't ever walk the halls of our high school ever again. He will either be in juvenile detention or alternative school, but after a death, it's very serious. We just heard an hour ago that the Texas Rangers have been called in as well.
Sigh.
No one is saying how the guy in the hospital is doing. He was in a coma - we heard he woke up - and now we hear he's in an induced coma. It's just so scary. His parents own several stores in our small town, and DD works at one of them. They are super nice people, as are the other parents. There are LOTS of stories going around town. Our town is less than 10,000 and everybody knows everybody else's business. We heard that these boys had gone to a friend's house and were going to smoke pot after midnight for National Weed day - today, 4-20. (I'm not sure how this day became pot smoker's celebration day, but it is.) We heard they left the party and smoked pot and that it was laced with LSD? But the truth of which drug is still unknown. The first boy died at our hospital and they sent the other one to San Antonio. Everyone is devastated and have talked about it all day.
And as I've spoken to a lot of the parents today, many of which are teachers or married to cops, I see that my 16 year old isn't telling me much of what's going on in her high school. She probably figures I won't give her many freedoms with this knowledge. One thing is certain; this town won't be the same. Most parents and the high school will buckle down and get strict now. There are too many young people's deaths for the amount of people we have in our town and enough is enough. There is a LOT of drug use  and a lot of sex, and I don't mean between two committed people in a relationship. What are we, Hollywood?? Evidently the boy in the coma, also made a sex tape a few weeks ago. Another "popular" girl is giving oral sex to random guys in the school like it's nothing. And ALL of the kids that I hear about, have nice, normal, upstanding parents.
I moved to a small town to get away from all of the city's craziness.
I am in shock...
