"All that glitters isn't gold..."

The 83rd Academy Awards show was the most awkward, odd and embarressing Oscars that I've ever watched, and I watch every year. The two young hosts, Ann Hathaway and James Franco, were awful and immature and made me long for the old days with hosts like David Letterman and Billy Crystal. I can remember the greats like Johnny Carson and Bob Hope hosting, and hosting with class. Even Ann's 10 dress changes could not make up for her tacky wooing as she announced each guest actor like she was at a pep rally.... "Here's Steven Spielberg!!!!! Wooooo-wooooo!!!!!" - ugh.... And James Franco acted like he was at Thanksgiving dinner with a family he couldn't stand. And today several talking heads alluded to his strong affinity for pot, and that he was probably under the influence. I personally couldn't get past how yellow his teeth looked - yack.

I just think the Academy bombed at trying to appeal to the younger audience, and definitely ran off the older audience. And then, to get NINETY-FOUR YEAR OLD Kirk Douglas??!! Poor guy has had a stroke and it's almost impossible to understand him. Then, Melissa Leo follows him winning an oscar for Best Supporting Actress, her first win and she drops the F bomb??!! Wow... class act... THEN as she leaves the stage with Kirk Douglas, she grabs his cane so I am cringing thinking at any moment he's going to take a terrible fall. There were a few classy acts but they were from England - Colin Firth and Helen Mirren...
There were no surprises in the show - even the dresses were boring, many wearing black or red, both of which are no-no's on the red carpet. But the hosts will set the tone, and the tone they set was childish, classless and embarressing. Just after it began my Facebook started with comments like "WTF?" and "lame." Most of these stars seemed to just phone it in. This Oscars was the last for ET veteran Mary Hart, which seemed a metaphor for the Baby Boomers passing the baton to the next generation. It's just a little disconcerting. This show had no "gravitas," even with the injection of Oprah and Steven Spielberg.
Bring back Ricky Gervais.... at least he was entertaining.
