"All that glitters isn't gold..."

The 83rd Academy Awards show was the most awkward, odd and embarressing Oscars that I've ever watched, and I watch every year. The two young hosts, Ann Hathaway and James Franco, were awful and immature and made me long for the old days with hosts like David Letterman and Billy Crystal. I can remember the greats like Johnny Carson and Bob Hope hosting, and hosting with class. Even Ann's 10 dress changes could not make up for her tacky wooing as she announced each guest actor like she was at a pep rally.... "Here's Steven Spielberg!!!!! Wooooo-wooooo!!!!!" - ugh.... And James Franco acted like he was at Thanksgiving dinner with a family he couldn't stand. And today several talking heads alluded to his strong affinity for pot, and that he was probably under the influence. I personally couldn't get past how yellow his teeth looked - yack.

I just think the Academy bombed at trying to appeal to the younger audience, and definitely ran off the older audience. And then, to get NINETY-FOUR YEAR OLD Kirk Douglas??!! Poor guy has had a stroke and it's almost impossible to understand him. Then, Melissa Leo follows him winning an oscar for Best Supporting Actress, her first win and she drops the F bomb??!! Wow... class act... THEN as she leaves the stage with Kirk Douglas, she grabs his cane so I am cringing thinking at any moment he's going to take a terrible fall. There were a few classy acts but they were from England - Colin Firth and Helen Mirren...
There were no surprises in the show - even the dresses were boring, many wearing black or red, both of which are no-no's on the red carpet. But the hosts will set the tone, and the tone they set was childish, classless and embarressing. Just after it began my Facebook started with comments like "WTF?" and "lame." Most of these stars seemed to just phone it in. This Oscars was the last for ET veteran Mary Hart, which seemed a metaphor for the Baby Boomers passing the baton to the next generation. It's just a little disconcerting. This show had no "gravitas," even with the injection of Oprah and Steven Spielberg.
Bring back Ricky Gervais.... at least he was entertaining.

"There are bad men out there plotting to kill you." - Anthony Maschek

Anthony Maschek, 28, is an Idaho native who miraculously survived a firefight in Iraq in February 2008. In the hail of gunfire, he broke both legs and suffered wounds to his abdomen, arms and chest after being shot 11 times. He was awarded the high honor of the Purple Heart. He spent the last 2 years at Walter Reed recovering from these wounds. Currently he is a freshman at Columbia University studying economics.

Last week the university had a townhall meeting on whether the ROTC should be allowed back on campus. Anthony spoke and made an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military and said, "It doesn't matter how you feel about the war. It doesn't matter how you feel about fighting. There are bad men out there plotting to kill you." Their response? The students heckled this war hero, and hissed and booed him. Several laughed and jeered and some yelled, "Racist."
Well, listen you bunch of punks.... You bunch of elitist Ivy League snobs... This brave young man, (and your fellow student) was fighting for YOUR freedom, YOUR freedom of speech, and even YOUR freedom to sin. You had better thank God we have brave men and women willing to fight - at least for now - for YOUR freedom!! Because if they were all like you,
God help us....

"We need to be alert to the fact that these evil-doers still exist..." - George Bush

A few days ago I wrote a blog about pirates, but deleted it thinking that no one was interested in that but me. I had just seen "Hawaii Five-O" last week and was surprised that there are now pirates in Hawaii. Too, Mexican pirates recently killed a young newlywed man at the Mexican border on Lake Amistad. Even large cruise ships have been shot at by these 'thugs on the water.' And now today we learn that the four Americans that were taken hostage on February 11th off of the coast of Africa were murdered.

When I was young, you never heard anything like this happening, but the world is more brazen and violent now. It's being reported that there are 660 known hostages being held by pirates worldwide, and at least 30 ships. The couple from Southern California, the Adam's, have been sailing around the world and passing out Bibles along the way. I had gone to their website last week, and it showed that they had not checked in since 2-11. Today, the website no longer has their information, and shows a default site...
When I heard the news about them being captured, I wondered what their thoughts were? Mine would've been that I was screwed with the liberals in charge of our country right now, which ended up being an accurate assessment. It seems the pirates think like criminals always do... They start it, we retaliate and then THEY punish us for the retaliation. Evidently these thugs were angry that one of their own was sentenced last week in New York to 33 years. It was the same mindset of those that attacked us on 9-11, and when we respond, they are infuriated that we did.
America is a laughing stock around the world these days. Our mentality of political correctness has pervaded everything and has made us extremely weak globally. Evil-doers are no longer afraid, since our track record shows we don't DO anything. They have carte blanche with the liberals in power. Just ask the Adams.
Oh wait, you can't... they're dead.

"Laughter is an instant vacation." - Milton Berle

Well, my children are telling me that I'm too negative lately, so.... this photo struck me as funny, and evidently I really need to laugh lately. These are the Real Housewives of New Jersey, which I do NOT watch. The story says they are "ditching their parkas for bikinis" and are heading to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.

Oh, you don't know HOW hard it is to NOT say something snarky...

"Practice what you preach..."

Remember last week when Obama spoke about our tough economy and said we "might have to put off a vacation" and "everyone must sacrifice?" Well, it seems everyone but HIS FAMILY. Michelle has taken THEIR daughters to ski in Vail for Presidents Day weekend. (Does anyone else see the irony in this?) Oh, and the Bidens are currently vacationing in the Florida Keys...

Wow.

"After all.... tomorrow is another day." - Scarlett O' Hara

Today was one of the worst days of my life. I won't go into it, but (sigh) it was horrible... I had to do all the things I could do to keep sane. I had to drive for a few hours.... I had to go to a park that is one of my "happy places" since my family used to go there when I was young and I have great memories there. I had to listen to Christmas carols on my iPhone, and I had to close my eyes and go to my other "happy place," which is the beach in California. It took me a very long time to get back to a semblance of normal.

Maybe "tomorrow is another day..."

"Those who can't, teach?"

WHY didn't I become a teacher?? I went to the University of Texas, and had my pick of whatever I wanted to do. And the girls that chose the teaching profession had the best intentions, like my sister, who knew it would be the perfect job when they married and had children.... Holidays off? Check. Out at the end of school? Check. Summers off? Check. Even be able to be at some schools when their child was there. Check. And then know all of the teachers and administration so your kid can have an advantage. Check.

So here we are now. Worst economy by a long shot in my life. I've had to spend my retirement to keep my head above water. I have only had 2 weeks off TOTAL in 3 years. I have to work all of the Monday holidays. I have no union fighting for me. I have insurance for catastrophic only with HUGE deductibles and no dental. And in my small town, the teachers have a great lifestyle. They are all friends, their children are friends, and they don't seem to stress like I do, where I worry every day that my sales aren't high enough, and I could lose my job. I'm working twice as hard as I did 3 years ago for similar results.
These teachers in Wisconsin DISGUST me... Spoiled brats. They live on easy street, and their big union wants to keep them there. The rest of us have to for go vacations and pull way back on spending. But these teachers? They don't understand that MY tax dollars are paying for them to live a much better lifestyle than the rest of us in the middle class. And then they 'skip school' to protest and encourage their students to come along!! AAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!! Most of the teachers I know are liberals since they've been government workers for way too long, and enjoy the indoctrination of the green lifestyle, and global warming, and recycling. My sister, who, granted, IS a good teacher, has gone to Italy the last two summers and not had to pay anything but her own food. She's applied for grants, and was chosen, twice, to go there - two years ago for 2 weeks and last summer for a MONTH! And this, during a time when Americans are supposed to be 'tightening our belts.' When politicians start 'cutting the fat,' maybe THIS should be the first place they start! I am glad for her that she got to go, but I find it completely irresponsible of our government to be paying for trips like this.
I'm just saying....

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear."

You may have heard about this 71 year old woman from England this week. A cell phone video surfaced of six young men robbing a jewelry store in broad daylight in Northampton, and Ann Timson got her purse and BY HERSELF starting wailing on all of them until, one by one, they ran off. No one else stopped to help her, but one person DID decide to catch it on video. She was invited to appear on the Today Show in New York City with her son and grandaughter for her bravery. We need more "Ann's" in this country to stand up to the bad guys.

I like a woman with cajones....

Update on Bibi (see Saturday's post)

An update on Bibi, who's Afghan husband cut off her nose and ears... She was brought to America and is staying in New York City. Doctors operated on her last October to give her a prosthetic nose, but will not do more surgery for now since she suffers from post-tramatic stress syndrome. She is learning English and making beaded jewelry, while being offered sanctuary by the charity Women for Afghan Women.

"Fight and slay the pagans (infidels/unbelievers) wherever you find them." - Surah 9:5 in Quran

Today's news reports that CBS' reporter Lara Logan revealed that last Friday she was the victim of a "sustained sex attack" and beating while covering Egyptian protests, and had to be saved by a group of women and soldiers. (This was February 11, the day that President Mubarak stepped down and Egyptians were celebrating in the streets.) Lara was reporting in Tahrir square, got caught up in the mob, was separated from her crew, when a group surrounded  her. She is still in the hospital....

This added to the fact that Fox News reporter Greg Palkot and cameraman Olaf Wiig were savagedly beaten, and CNN's Anderson Cooper and group were assaulted as well.
So much for Obama's description of "peaceful protesters..." He has said that this isn't about jihad but about freedom.
I think they DO want more money, but equally hate Westerners/infidels and want to see us suffer and/or die.
THIS is the center of their faith...

Now Lady Gag me is adding flesh 'horns' to her look.... rather demonic, don't you think?

"The Look-at-ME generation..."

You've probably heard by now that Stephani Germanotta, I mean Lady Gag me, arrived at the Grammy's in an egg. How original........ she's such a rip-off. I can remember reading that Carole Lombard (Clark Gable's wife, for those younger like Alex, who had no idea who she was) went to a Hollywood party in the 1930's and made her grand entrance from an ambulance, and they removed her on a stretcher. The theme was "all white" and, at that time, all hospital garb was white. And Lady Gaga's (I have SUCH a hard time calling her this) new dance numbers are VERY close to Madonna's previous concerts. Even the play-it-safe Entertainment Tonight, showed them side by side for comparison. But it got me thinking last night, that this age group is the "Look at me! Look at me!" generation. Everybody has to one up the next one, and it's a constant competition with them to see who gets the most attention, however they can get it.

When DD, my youngest, left her private school last month after 10 years, that was always my comment, is that she never had a friend that 'had her back.' All these girls were constantly trying to beat DD in whatever she did. It was never like that when I was growing up... At least with your best friends, they were (mostly) on your side. These girls are vicious, and truly as bad or worse than the movie, "Mean Girls," which if you haven't seen, you can guess by the title. The lies, the meanness, the competing, the deception.... it was wearing...
But it's not just at that school, it's all over America. Where is the kindness? The parents these days all try to act like Tiger Woods' dad, and start their kid in something in preschool, and hope their kid likes it later. I started DD in dance at age 4, but then my mother got cancer, and I had to pull her out, since all of our trips to see her and help started, and then by age 7, the rest of them were already advanced, and currently are the dance divas in our town. It used to be the minority of parents were like this, but not any more. You always hear these days that families are not eating dinner together. This is true!! They are at sporting events, and extra curricular events every single night, and that's all over the nation. Parents are working, and spending evenings at these events, so everyone's eating fast food and trying to help their child get ahead in the 21st century. Only very few are emphasizing school work because those aren't the jobs they aspire to. It's all part of the dumbing down of America. No one wants to work hard and have a respectable job. They want to be a star. They want attention. They want to dress weird.
They all want to be Lady Gaga....

"Men are from Mars.."

Well, it's begun... Just saw on Facebook to change your profile pic to you and your significant other and put how long you've been together... Ah yes, for a single lady, we are upon one of the most dreaded days of the year... Valentine's Day...

I'm not sure who dreamed up Valentine's Day, I've read several stories and none of them seem plausible. Never is there more of an obvious disconnect, "Men are from Mars; Women from Venus" moment. Men are problem solvers; women are emotional beings. Men just want the facts; women want all the embellishments, with feelings attached. Not surprisingly, this translates to the bedroom as well. Women like to cuddle and be held and even talk; men just seem to enjoy the release, but I'll leave it at that.
And Valentine's Day? Well, I liken it to marriage proposals. There is a small percentage of men that get it right and meet women's expectations on the romantic meter. Most guys just want to do the least possible to stay out of the dog house, i.e. flowers and/or chocolates. He gets extra points if he sends it to her at work where all her coworkers can see his public display of love, and thus all the girls will be jealous and wish their guy was like that. An expensive dinner will trump this since we get to dress up and go out with all the other lucky gals who's paramour's are doing the same thing. And then, topping that, would be the Valentine weekend trip, like a wine trail weekend or B&B shopping/sightseeing excursion.
At my first job at the Dallas Times Herald one of my coworkers was in her mid twenties, and her husband got her boss' permission to 'kidnap' her at work and whisk her away in a private plane to fly to their favorite restaurant in Austin for their anniversary. Now THAT'S what I'm talking about! We STILL talk about THAT one.... Her husband was continually doing the extras to make her feel loved. Marriage/relationships are like plants - you have to keep watering and feeding them - it's ongoing.
But alas, (sigh) I will go to work tomorrow and watch the other girls get flowers, chocolates, and whatever from all the good ones. And me? Try not to look sad. Act like I don't care that adulthood is only for couples. That being single is like trying to go through life with one arm. Life is meant to be shared...
So friends, if you have a significant other, be thankful. And don't worry about the flowers and candy -
that's just icing on the cake...

"Multi-culturalism has failed..." - Sarkozy

DON'T TELL ME that it's okay to allow multi-culturalism when THIS is what happens... This is Bibi Aisha who was 18 when she left her husband, Taliban fighter, over claims of domestic abuse. In an act of retribution, the Taliban allowed him to cut off her ears and nose. Her husband abandoned her after the assault; American soldiers and aid workers later rescued her and transported her to the United States, where she now lives, for reconstructive surgery.

So are we going to make nice with these people???? We cannot allow freedom of religion when it crosses our laws!!! We cannot allow these people to move here, when all they want to do is establish their disgusting, unacceptable laws in our country!! Come on people!!
Stand up to evil!!!!

"Let my people go..."

It's 2-11-11.... a day Egypt will always remember. I've been watching them celebrate in the streets with a mixed reaction. Of course I see that these people have been oppressed... and you cannot help but be happy for them in this moment that they think they are free... The human soul yearns to be free and wants the rights that have been guaranteed to Americans in our constitution.

Then I look at President Obama, who seems to care more for the Egyptians than the United States. He seems to relate more to them on some level than he does with us. In his speech he said, "Today belongs to the people of Egypt..." Maybe he should resign and go be pharoah, I mean president of Egypt. Mmmmm... wishful thinking on my part. He was all for peaceful protesting in THEIR country, but when the Tea Party arose with PEACEFUL protesting, he disregarded us. When we marched at the Washington monument, he didn't even respond.
Then we have the U.S. Director of National Intelligence saying today that the MUSLIM Brotherhood is a SECULAR organization. Say what??! By the very nature of their NAME, even an idiot can see that's incorrect. Unless you don't know that secular means "not belonging to a religious order." Hello?!
No, this group of radical Muslims is either behind this coup, or will take advantage of it, now that there is a void of power. It seems that these are the passionate ones who will stop at nothing to do their mission. The mission is "caliphate" - which is to spread Islam to the entire world. I've noticed that the Muslim religion has a perverted twist for each facet of the Christian faith. Christians want to evangelize the world with love, Islam will force their beliefs and laws with killing. Christians have martyrs, Islam has suicide bombers that kill innocent people. Christians give the most freedom to women; Islam treats them like slaves. Christians forgive sins i.e. adultery; Islam stones them to death.
Today Iran's dictator Ahmadinejad says there will be a new Middle East. He's the one that wants to blow Israel off the face of the earth. If the Muslims would not let the radicals take over, then they would have a chance of peace. If they would condemn acts like 9-11 and not follow the radicals, then it could go back to how it was 30-40 years ago. But they remain silent. Are they afraid or do they really believe the rhetoric? I would certainly bet that things are only going to get worse in the Middle East....
And here in America? We had better listen to the words out of Western Europe this week.... That "multi-culturalism has failed." The Muslims that have moved into Britain and France, are not assimilating, nor do they want to. They are only coming to take over, little by little, and they have proven to be patient. The men who committed the murders of innocent lives on 9-11, took their time in their plan. And then one day... they executed. They executed their plan and they executed over 3,000 people that day. And little by little, they advance here in the U.S. They probably laugh that we don't profile here. There have been lots of stories about them doing dry runs on airplanes and acting erratic, and then when people report them, they say we are prejudiced.
Today Obama said he heard of Mubarak's resignation on the news. Wow... really makes you feel secure, doesn't it.... I find it all disturbing, so I find solace in the quote, "I don't know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future."

"A competitor will find a way to win."

Here's my short post for today... Tonight my youngest daughter, DD, and I had to go to a mandatory cheerleader tryout meeting at the high school, since tryouts for next year (9th grade) are next month on March 11th. The meeting was for ALL girls who will be trying out for cheerleader at the high school. It was actually amusing, as the girls all sized each other up, and the moms looked nervously around to see who the competitors against their daughters are. And we live in small town Texas, where cheerleading is BIG; make that HUGE! They are changing a lot of the rules for the squads next year, since one set of cheerleaders here got caught in their uniforms drinking and driving, and subsequently got DWI's. And then, a few weeks ago, half of the girl basketball players, including cheerleaders, went to the mall in the city, and somehow were able to shoplift some really expensive clothes. Both of these incidents were the talk of the town, since gossip is the biggest past time. None of them got kicked off the squad, but it's doubtful the ones returning will be chosen, since the new teacher evaluations now count more than any skill in the tryouts.

Should be interesting....

Only in America...

Only in America would 'we the people' allow a group started by a science fiction writer in the 1950's to be called a religion and thus receive tax exempt status.... a group that believes humanity's every problem derives from the spirits of murdered space aliens. They believe that 75 million years ago an evil galactic ruler named Xenu solved overpopulation by bringing trillions of people to Earth in DC-8 space planes, stacking them around volcanoes and nuking them. Then the souls of these dead space aliens were captured, boxed up and taken to cinemas where they were shown films of what life should be like, false ideas containing God, the devil and Christ, and told to get ill. After that, they supposedly clustered together and now inhabit our bodies. They believe that if they rid themselves of these body thetans, then they will be healthier and will gain special powers like mind-over-matter. This group's founder wrote a book in 1950 called "Dianetics, the Modern Science of Mental Health," and his movement grew out of the book when his followers began "auditing" each other. He was quoted as saying, "You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion." Followers pay a lot of money to "audit" and get the "souls of these dead space aliens" out of their bodies... They have been banned in several countries: in 2000 France debated dissolving them as a religion, in 1999 they lost their charity status in Britain, and in 1997 they were banned in Greece. I recommend you read Andrew Morton's unauthorized biography about Tom Cruise to find out more about this 'religion.'

Truth is stranger than fiction...
